PRESS RELEASE
After a warm reception at the Municipal Art Gallery of Mykonos “Maria Iglessi” of the recent seascape visual ensemble titled “The Aegean gave you the marvellous journey” by the accomplished painter Petros Zoumboulakis, awarded by the Academy of Athens, the exhibition continues its journey to Tinos Island at the Cultural Foundation of Tinos.
The title’s reference to the well-known verse of the poet C. P. Cavafy (Ithaca) signals the artist’s poetic approach vis-à-vis the depiction of Cycladic islands, including Mykonos and Tinos.
The works exhibited are the culmination of the artist’s long research into the “Endless Landscape”. To quote him: “The landscape has always been a source of inspiration for me. I admire its variety and diversity. The seas and the fallow islets, the dry-stone walls and the meadows, the sandy beaches, the cliffs and the valleys seen from above are an evolution of my Endless Landscape, which I have been working on for many years”.
Zoumboulakis uses an almost cinematic narrative, depicting nature either from a bird’s eye view perspective or with close-ups. Every painting function as an autonomous expression while being integrated in an endless visual universe, without beginning or end. Thus, he invites viewers to function interactively and use their imagination to fill the “gaps” of the changeable visual composition.
The exhibition also includes portraits of Greek poets who have exalted the sea element (Odysseas Elytis, Nikos Kavvadias, etc.), as well as an accompanying installation with sounds of waves, wind and rain that creates a multisensory experience for viewers.
